A no-fee school in Cape Town is calling for donations to help feed matriculants writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
The matric breakfast run is one of Heideveld Secondary School's most cherished traditions, aimed at showing candidates love and support by supplying them with a nutritious meal before each exam.
Heideveld Secondary has 188 Grade 12 pupils this year, many of whom rely on meals received at school.
Heideveld Secondary School teacher and matric breakfast co-ordinator, Marlene Douries, said that a hearty breakfast improved focus and concentration and boosts energy levels.
"We want you all to get involved by donating either breakfast ingredients, bread, viennas, polony, juice, eggs, milk, cereals... any donation whatsoever is welcome."
She added that parents had jumped in to help with cooking, while teachers served the food.
"We understand that they come from families that struggle to make ends meet. Very often, this meal is probably the only good meal or one meal that they have for the day. We want to prevent them coming to write with empty stomachs."
Douries said that the school recorded a 12% improvement in results last year and they believe this initiative had a part to play.
