Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has told Parliament that it was his idea to get his Chief of Staff, Cedric Nkabinde, to record his conversations with KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Mchunu said this was after Mkhwanazi addressed Nkabinde in a threatening manner and also made threats against Mchunu.
The Ad Hoc Committee investigating corruption on Friday heard an audio recording of a conversation, allegedly between Mkhwanazi and Nkabinde, discussing issues related to the disbanding of the task team.
Evidence leader Advocte Norman Arendse asked Mchunu why Nkabinde secretly recorded Mkhwanazi without his consent.

"Is there a legal reason you, as the minister and your chief of staff, can record conversations with people under the Cyber Act or some legislation?"
Mchunu said it was a precaution and had nothing to do with the Ad hoc committee or Madlanga Commission.
"It's me who advised the chief of staff to say you may need to record your conversations with General Mkhwanazi because of the threats. It was not because of the commission, I wasn't thinking about the commission or any other thing because he kept on saying General Mkhwanazi is angry."
