It’s suspected he was involved in the murder of a Crime Intelligence official last week.
Constable Sbonelo Ngidi was shot dead on Friday night after being confronted by a suspect who had blocked off a road in Mariannhill, west of Durban.
It’s understood that the suspect was urinating when Ngidi, who was off duty at the time, requested that he move his vehicle so he could pass.
The suspect allegedly approached Ngidi’s vehicle and shot him several times.
A police officer attached to operational response services handed himself over to Hawks detectives in Durban in relation to the murder of 29-year-old Ngidi.
KZN’s Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo, confirmed the suspect had evaded arrest on Thursday.
Police launched a manhunt to find Ngidi’s killer after he was shot several times.
Despite Ngidi’s passenger driving him to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, having sustained several gunshot wounds to his upper body.
The suspect has been charged with murder and will appear in court on Monday.
