Statistics from The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) show that 9 out of 10 people living with a mental illness do not have access to treatment.
This comes as the organisation hosts park runs all over the country on Saturday, to raise awareness on mental health related issues.
Reports from the group show that 1 in 3 South Africans experience a mental illness in their lifetime, however access to help is limited.
The group is calling on South Africans to unite in breaking stigma surrounding mental health in communities.
SADAG’s Operations Director, Cassey Chambers said their theme this year is together for mental health
“Every single day SADAG receives 3,000 incoming calls from people throughout the country who are feeling helpless and hopeless and need help. We need to say that the action is clear. Mental health cannot be left in the shadows and every South African has a role to play in raising awareness, breaking stigma and offering support," said Chambers.
