The City of Cape Town is set to roll out its M3 Congestion Relief Project in 2026, a multi-year initiative aimed at easing traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest routes.
Roadworks on Fernwood Avenue and access to the left-only lane can be expected, and the removal of the Fernwood Avenue pedestrian crossing.
Upper Tawky Avenue at the intersection of the M3 will be closed along the M3 for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Full road closures can also be expected at Upper Hillwood Road at the intersection of the M3. This median closure will result in a cul-de-sac in the area.
These proposed changes include removing two signalised intersections and three medians to create a more efficient and safer M3 corridor, according to the City's Rob Quintas.
Quintas reports that, after public participation and the environmental impact assessment, the project will commence in the second half of 2026 and continue into 2027.
"It is a chokehold nightmare situation for commuters over the years as the City has grown, and we want to implement this," says Quintas.

"With anything new, there will always be some unhappiness around it, but we have to do what we can within the limited road space we have to improve that nightmare."
