Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo, revealed WhatsApp chats between tender tycoon and attempted murder-accused, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, and North West businessman and alleged information peddler, Brown Mogotsi, on his second day of testimony at the Madlanga Commission.

Messages revealed that promises made by Mogotsi to assist Matlala in his fight to ensure his R360 million police contract was not cancelled proved futile, as he extorted more than R100,000 from Matlala over the course of several months.

The controversial contract was cancelled in May following an instruction by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to investigate the tender.

The names of several high-profile officials, including Mchunu, Crime Intelligence spy boss, Feroz Khan, and deputy national police commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya, were mentioned in communication between Matalala and Mogotsi.

While it’s evident that Mogotsi swindled thousands from alleged underworld figure, Matlala, by promising to introduce him to powerful decision-makers in SAPS, Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo, claims Matlala had allies of his own.

Khumalo, testifying before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday, showed a thread of messages between Matlala and Mogotsi where the name of Crime Intelligence spy boss, Major-General Feroz Khan, featured.

"Mr Matlala seemed to have a special relationship with General Khan in reference to the chats that we have seen between Mr Matlala and Brown Mogotsi."

Senior police sources claim at the heart of the division in SAPS is the fight between Khumalo and Khan for control over Crime Intelligence.

Khumalo is currently the head of Crime Intelligence but his position remains under question following his arrest by IDAC on fraud and corruption charges in June.

Khumalo will resume his testimony on Wednesday.
