Kwazulu-Natal’s Department of Transport is set to announce urgent safety interventions for scholar transport following a series of recent tragedies that claimed the lives of five learners.
Transport MEC Sboniso Duma is expected to outline the department’s response during a media briefing at the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.
A number of other crashes involving scholar transportation were recorded, with residents raising concerns and complaints.

Planned interventions include stricter regulations for vehicles transporting learners, increased law enforcement visibility on school routes, and targeted roadworthiness inspections.
"He will outline interventions on scholar transport following an accident that resulted in the death of five learners in Pietermaritzburg. He will further outline and reflect on key infrastructure projects championed by the Department of Transport and Human Settlements."
