DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has called on municipalities to closely monitor roads in township areas.
This follows last week’s horrific crash in Imbali Township in Pietermaritzburg, where five children died after a taxi drove into a preschool classroom.
Speaking on Saturday at the funeral of Mthobisi Khambule, one of the young victims, Duma confirmed that the taxi involved was not roadworthy.
He also urged communities to ensure that the scholar transport they rely on complies with all road safety regulations.
"Unfortunately, some of these vehicles are just hired by the parents, so unfortunately as well for us, that we don't monitor the road inside the township, we only do the national and provincial roads, so the municipality must get closer in the processes and ensure that they monitor these processes, so that we don't have this recklessness loss of lives that are not even an issue that must happen, because we must protect those things."
