CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Mobility Department says it'll oppose any court challenge of its decision to close certain taxi routes in Cape Town.
This after taxi association CODETA indicated that it would be taking the provincial government to court over this decision.
A 30-day shutdown of routes between Khayelitsha and Mfuleni, to Somerset West and surrounds, has been implemented from 17 September to prevent further violence which has claimed several lives in recent weeks.
CODETA's urgent court application could not be heard by the high court due to the parties failing to file their court papers on time.
Provincial Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku said they would not bow down to taxi organisations.
"Whatever court action they're taking against us, we will oppose that action for the safety of the residents of this province. I did sign a replying affidavit in court today, and we will wait for the court to decide."
Sileku says the focus should rather be directed to peace talks rather than taking the government to court.
