WC Social Development Dept welcomes 138 new volunteers in fight against GBV

CAPE TOWN  - The Western Cape Social Development Department has welcomed 138 new volunteers in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).  

Volunteers joined the department’s GBV Ambassadors Programme, which provides support to survivors of violence.  

The programme also aims to create awareness around domestic abuse and gender-based violence.  

MEC for Social Development in the Western Cape, Jaco Londt, said the new volunteers have doubled their numbers in the province.  

"They will be increasing the footprint of existing GBV ambassador programmes. The fact that we have more residents raising their hands to be part of this programme, shows the impact that current GBV ambassadors are having in their respective communities."

Londt added that these volunteers would be stationed in Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain, Retreat, Philippi and Wynberg.

"We are creating a movement, one of hope and peace. Thank you to these incredible ambassadors for availing themselves to a cause that seeks not only to prevent GBV but to strengthen support for survivors by offering them a safe space and easier pathways to support services."
