City Power suspends all scheduled prepaid meter conversions until November

CAPE TOWN - City Power has suspended all prepaid meter conversions scheduled between 27 August to 1 November.
This is so the utility company can investigate financial and operational concerns raised about the process and ensure it is handled correctly and fairly.
The prepaid electricity metering was introduced in 2010 for Johannesburg customers.
However, City Power said recent reviews have raised concerns that need to be addressed before further conversions are done.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena explained what some of the concerns raised are: "These concerns include customers who have converted to prepaid from postpaid meters but are not purchasing electricity, discrepancies in some accounts not being accurately reflected on City Power’s systems after conversion, and also the impact of prepaid tariff structures, which until July 2024, excluded fixed service and network charges has also been."
