Five people die after taxi overturns on N1 North in Midrand

JOHANNESBURG - Five people have died after the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N1 North freeway in Midrand.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said the incident occurred between the Buccleuch Interchange and Allandale Road.

Emergency services and law enforcement are currently on the scene of the accident.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said traffic was affected.

"The far-right lane is currently affected, and traffic is severely backed up. A full closure of the freeway will be necessary shortly to allow for the proper processing of the scene and recovery operations."
