JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Social Development (DSD) said the suspension of the long serving spokesperson, Lumka Oliphant, is to allow an investigation against her without interference.
Oliphant released a scathing statement on Monday, saying she was suspended because DSD Minister Sisisi Tolashe believes she leaked information to the Sunday Times newspaper.
She has since accused the department of accusing her of trumped-up charges.
Her suspension follows an exposé in the paperabout the department's travel expenses and accommodation to the tune of R3 million for a stay at a New York hotel.
In a short notice on Monday morning, the department said the investigation is part of consequence management emanating from finding by the Auditor-General (AG).
However, Oliphant said the AG's findings had nothing to do with her and should be directed at the Director General.
