JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it will be arguing for a maximum sentence for self-confessed killer Amber Lee Hughes.

On Thursday, the 25-year-old was found guilty of the murder and rape of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita, her ex-boyfriend’s child.

Challita’s body was discovered in a bathtub filled with cold water on the 23rd of January 2023.

Two months ago, Amber Lee Hughes' judgment was meant to be handed down by the High Court, but due to Hughes's last-minute change in legal representation, the case was postponed.

With the guilty judgment handed to the former pre-school teacher on Thursday, Nada-Jane Challita’s family have shared that they have mixed emotions about how things have unfolded.

Gauteng NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjondondwane hopes the outcome gives the family much-needed solace.

“So we hope that the father will also find closure now that we've reached this stage. And going forward, as the NPA, we will be arguing for a sentence that will send a message that this type of behaviour cannot be tolerated."

She added that NPA would argue for a maximum sentence to be handed down.
