CAPE TOWN - The annual Khayelitsha Road Race will go ahead as planned next weekend.
There were concerns that the race might be cancelled due to taxi-related violence in the area this week.
A taxi driver was killed at the Vuyani taxi rank in Khayelitsha on Monday, and two others were wounded when two armed men opened fire.
However, race organisers say they've been meeting with law enforcement agencies in Cape Town to ensure the safety of runners and supporters.
More than one thousand runners are expected to take part in the 5- and 10-kilometre races hosted at the Mandela Park Stadium on Sunday, 7 September.
The annual event hosted by the Khayelitsha Athletics Club is aimed at celebrating community spirit and supporting those in need.
Race director Siphiwo Klaas says the recent taxi violence is not a threat to the event...
"We have Metro police onboard, we have the law Enforcement, and we have the South African Police Service that are going to be part of the event to ensure the safety of the runners and the event itself. Also, we have city traffic ensuring that runners are safe on the roads."
