CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Mobility Department said it was concerned about a sharp increase in road deaths in the province.
It said that during the first 11 days of August, 52 people lost their lives in road accidents on the Western Cape's roads, compared to 28 over the same period last year.
During the same period, traffic officers arrested over 190 drivers for drunk driving.
According to the department, speeding, alcohol use and unsafe pedestrian crossings were the main causes behind the accidents.
Mobility MEC Issac Sileku called on road users to avoid walking on freeways to rather use safe, legal routes.
"I’m asking every driver, passenger and pedestrian, slow down, stay sober and make the choices that keep us all alive. Let’s make sure no more families have to get that devastating call."
