JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni will go ahead with its 8th regional conference despite threats of court action and open letters calling for proceedings to be halted.
Six party members have already approached the high court, seeking to have the 3-day gathering interdicted.
The last time Ekurhuleni elected leadership was in 2022, when violent clashes broke out, votes from at least 12 branches were placed in quarantine and excluded from the final tally.
It's understood mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, who is also the convener, is the frontrunner in the race for regional chair
Delegates will have to pick between Xhakaza or former treasurer Sello Sekhokho, a tenderpreneur linked to Tembisa Hospital graft, when it comes to choosing a chairperson.
Despite attempts to have the conference halted, looks likely to go ahead with delegates having already started the registration process.

EWN understands ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula is likely to open the conference.
Ekurhuleni is seen as a key battleground in the province, which could bolster Mbalula's own ambitions for higher office in the party in the long run.
More than 40 of the party’s regions are expected to elect new leaders this year.
