JOHANNESBURG - Trade union Solidarity has criticised low-cost carrier FlySafair, accusing the airline of not fully committing to resolving key concerns raised by striking pilots.

Negotiations between the two parties resumed earlier this week under the supervision of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), as efforts continue to find an amicable agreement.

While salary increases are among the demands, Solidarity said the core issue is the airline’s roster system, which the union claims leaves pilots without sufficient rest between flights.

The standoff led to a strike and lockout that began on Monday, disrupting operations at one of South Africa’s busiest airlines.

Solidarity spokesperson Helgard Cronje said, "The lockout and strike at FlySafair can easily be resolved if FlySafair was only prepared to sit with us and the CCMA through Friday evening and the weekend to resolve all the other outstanding issues. This dispute mainly evolves about pilots who want one weekend off a month but also have a more predictable flight schedule.”
