CAPE TOWN - Scores of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters will gather at the Khayelitsha rugby stadium in Cape Town on Saturday to celebrate the party’s 12th anniversary.
The red berets were forced to move the celebrations from Mthatha to Cape Town due to the devastating floods in the Eastern Cape Town, which took the lives of 103 people.
But Malema said this week that Khayelitsha was a worthy venue to celebrate because of its historical significance as the second-biggest township in the country after Soweto.
Khayelitsha rugby stadium will be a sea of red when the EFF’s supporters gather to mark another year as one of the biggest parties in the country.
The party announced its formation on 27 July in 2013 in Soweto and has been to every province to celebrate, except the Western Cape.
Founder and leader, Julius Malema, said this was mostly due to the region's unpredictable and rainy weather during this time of year.
But Malema said the party would erect a dome structure to make sure celebrations were not affected by bad weather.
"We have built a 10,000 capacity dome in Khayelitsha that will serve as the main venue for the rally. This structure includes all essential amenities, including sanitation facilities and will be ready to host thousands of fighters, supporters and community members."
The event will feature several performances by local artists and DJs before the main address by Malema, which will focus on the party’s successes as an opposition and challenges facing the poor.
