JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department is set to switch on its online admissions system for grade 1 and 8 pupils on Thursday.

The rollout has previously sparked frustration among parents who have said they did not receive placement offers, with others saying they are assigned to schools far from home.

Some parents camped outside hoping to avoid the technical glitches and confusion that have dogged the system in previous years.

Last year, hundreds said they never received placement notices, despite the department claiming that all pupils who applied were successfully placed.

As a result, some parents said they were forced to chase school spots door-to-door after being assigned placements far from home or at schools they never applied to.

But the department insists that those who don’t accept the offered spot are recorded as unplaced, even though a place is technically allocated.
