JOHANNESBURG - The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has thrown its weight behind its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, saying he did nothing wrong after he was found at the home of a suspected killer during a police raid.
On Monday, when police arrived to arrest controversial businessman Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe at his Sandton home, Kunene was also there.
Molefe is accused of being the mastermind behind the 2022 killing of Oupa Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody.
Kunene said he was at Molefe’s house, accompanying a young journalist who was interviewing the businessman for his website, Africa News Global.
PA national spokesperson Steve Motale said the party accepts Kunene’s version of events.
“We accept it. We know he is telling the truth. On our side, we are not worried or perturbed. He didn’t commit any crime whatsoever and even the person you are referring to is a suspect.
"So, since when is visiting a suspect a crime and since when does it make you complicit in whatever crime the person has committed?”
Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance (DA) Johannesburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser Echeozonjoku has called Kunene’s alibi “laughable,” saying he must be fired as the city’s MMC for transport.
“The people of South Africa do not deserve their local governments led by people who are at home with murder suspects.
"The people of Johannesburg do not deserve the underworld connections that Kenny Kunene brings to the mayoral committee in their city.”
