JOHANNESBURG - Nearly seven months after his arrest for the murder of his girlfriend and Gauteng crime warden, Chesnay Keppler, former police sergeant Mandla Buthelezi returns to court on Monday to fight for bail.

The 42-year-old is accused of murdering his 22-year-old girlfriend after an alleged domestic dispute on Boxing Day in 2024.

Police said Buthelezi shot Keppler before turning the gun on himself in an apparent suicide attempt, but recovered in hospital under police guard.

The former police sergeant made his first court appearance in January, initially indicating through his lawyer that he would not seek bail.

Buthelezi has since decided otherwise.

After months of delays and postponements, the bail hearing is now expected to get underway.

Buthelezi is expected to appear in person before the magistrate on Monday after previously attending proceedings via video link.

The case had been lined up for transfer to a higher court, but the bail application is likely to delay that process.

Family and friends of Chesnay Keppler are again expected to gather outside the court in the fight for justice for the slain crime warden.
