JOHANNESBURG - The attorney of the woman accused of running over a crowd of girls and killing one of them said he had a different version of what happened on the day, despite there being video footage.
The family has submitted CCTV footage of the incident to the police.
Kineil Muthray said he would not divulge how they planned to argue against the contents of the video, but he said his client did not intend to kill anyone.
Sixty-eight-year-old Martha van der Walt is facing a charge of culpable homicide for the incident that took place in June in Dinwiddie, Germiston.
Attorney Kineil Muthray said he would wait for the court process to unfold.
"Maybe the video that we’ve seen and the one that he has seen is completely different, that’s his own prerogative and view, he is entitled to it. As much as we believe she was accelerating, she did not having any remorse and she was accelerating."
The family of 13-year-old Pretty Mahlangu said they were hopeful that the footage would help secure a successful prosecution.
Family spokesperson Mzwandile Soyaya said: "Something must have happened for her to have accelerated and that's where the disconnect is with public perception, social media and the truth. There are two things that would happen - either we make a set of representations which would have to be on the record."
