CAPE TOWN - The Department of Correctional Services said a prison warder stabbed at Pollsmoor Prison is recovering well after being discharged from the hospital.

The incident took place two weeks ago and led to a partial shutdown of the prison.

It's believed that the incident was part of a gang initiation, and the lockdown has since been lifted.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the stabbing was unfortunate.

"This incident happened on the 27th of June, where one of our officials was stabbed by an offender, but the investigation has revealed that there was a plan hatched by a group of offenders to attack this official. That investigation is ongoing."

Nxumalo said the prisoners involved will face the full might of the law.

"This relates to what we've been saying all along that gangsterism does cause serious disturbances in our facilities, let alone that our officials get injured in the process."
