JOHANNESBURG - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has rehashed warnings about a doomsday coalition as the party defends its decision to stay in the Government of National Unity (GNU) amid renewed fractures in the multiparty coalition.

The two biggest political parties in the GNU, the African National Congress (ANC) and DA, continue to lock horns a year after their marriage.

In their latest spat, the two parties have been at odds with each other over the firing of the DA’s Andrew Whitfield as the trade and industry deputy minister.

The move by President Cyril Ramaphosa saw the DA pull out of the National Dialogue.

Speaking on the party’s weekly podcast on Sunday, Steenhuisen again defended the party's decision to stay put in government.

“I see there's a lot of talking heads and analysts that are very upset that we didn’t walk away from government this past week and everyone's got an opinion and until you're in the arena, those opinions are worthless because they don't have a grip, they don’t know the dynamics here. But the reality is, if we walk away from government, there are going to be serious consequences here.”
