JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza for an urgent debate in parliament on corruption allegations within the national police service.
The calls follow an explosive media briefing held by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in Durban on Sunday.
Mkhwanazi made disturbing allegations of corruption, political interference and malfeasance, by top law enforcement officials including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

The DA's Ian Cameron said that the debate should focus on the integrity management crisis that is playing out in the police service.
"What happened is a significant indictment on the management of the South African Police Service, and it begs the question why the necessary integrity management processes and checks and balances weren't in place for things to navigate this far. Massive risk taken by the KZN provincial commissioner in saying what has been said.”
He said that an urgent investigation into the matter is needed.
"It's also important to us that the president of the republic who's currently away to also immediately respond to the allegations regarding the minister of police. We will give feedback as we receive it from the speaker."
