JOHANNESBURG - The Hammanskraal water project aimed at restoring access to clean drinking water in Tshwane has officially entered its second phase.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina on Sunday handed over the newly upgraded Klipdrift water treatment works, which will supply communities including Majakaneng, Kudub, and Jubilee.

City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya said the additional water supply was currently undergoing a flushing process, which would be completed in three weeks, adding that they anticipated that by July, the water would be safe for consumption.

Earlier this year, residents in parts of Tshwane received clean running water for the first time in two decades, following the launch of the project at the Magalies Klipdrift water treatment plant.

Speaking at the handover, Majodina said: "This is one of the critical projects wherein we are trying to intervene and work together with Mangaung in ensuring that there is reliability of water. Your growing population needs water."

She urged local authorities to ensure proper maintenance.

"We want to make a plea to the municipality that will ensure that this 33.7km pipeline is taken care of. The last phase will be 150km pipe, but please do maintenance on this."
