JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has attributed its dwindling membership base to mass retrenchments within the mining sector.
It said that it could not run away from the ripple effect that the mining company cutbacks have had on the organisation.
Spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu explained that despite the challenge, the union was working on strategies to recruit new members.
"Companies like Sibanye-Stillwater in the gold sector have been retrenching for every year. It definitely affects us. We have developed a strategy for potential members to join NUM through our website."
He said that this had brought in a significant number of new recruits.
"Right now, when I'm speaking to you, we're sitting on 180,000 members. We were down 160,000 members. So, we want to go as much as 250,000."
