CAPE TOWN - National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola said that the aim of Operation Shanela Two is to bring peace and stability to areas ravaged by gangsterism and drugs.

Masemola said that the operation would deal with serious and violent crimes afflicting identified hotspots throughout the country.

The police commissioner launched the operation in Belhar on Thursday, where he addressed dozens of police officers before their deployment to crime hotspots across Cape Town.

"They are going to work in various townships on the Cape Flats, where we have violent crime. The objective is to make sure that we bring peace and stability and deal with drugs and gangs in those communities."

Masemola said that Operation Shanela Two would be different to its previous version.

"Here, as we do visibility, we are going to be more dedicated and focused on specifics. We are going to focus on specific people wanted for violent crime, gender-based violence, people that have skipped bail."

The commissioner said that the officers deployed to specific areas would be given a list of offenders to arrest.
