JOHANNESBURG - It hasn’t been a favourable week for the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng, with all its motions of no confidence in municipal councils failing to pass.
This week, the party tabled three motions of no confidence in the City of Johannesburg and Tshwane.
However, none of them succeeded as they were blocked by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)-led coalitions in both metros.

In the City of Tshwane, the DA sought to remove African Transformation Movement (ATM) member and Council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana; however, its motion of no confidence failed to pass in council on Thursday.
Similarly, the party attempted to unseat Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and Council Whip Sthebmiso Zungu, but lacked the numbers to succeed.
In both metros, the DA admitted it lacked the numerical support for the motions to pass.
DA Tshwane chief whip Ofentse Madzebatela said the motions in both cities were driven more by principle than by politics.
"We are exercising our democratic right. A motion of no confidence is provided for by the law and we will continue to use those mechanisms."
He said the party couldn’t just stand by and watch, accept poor service delivery in both cities.
