WC police confiscate at least 24 firearms in hotspot areas over past week

CAPE TOWN - An AK-47 assault rifle and a shotgun were among at least 24 firearms confiscated by police during crime prevention operations in hotspot areas over the past week.
Teams embarked on these operations since last Sunday in a bid to clamp down on gang violence.
"During these operations, police members confiscated 24 firearms, with a total of 371 rounds of ammunition, which includes an AK-47 assault rifle and a shotgun.
"SAPS [South African Police Service] detectives arrested 67 suspects wanted for murder and attempted murder during tracing operations," said the police's Wesley Twigg.
Twigg said their crime prevention initiatives will continue.
"The provincial commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, appreciates the efforts of the members on the ground who confiscated these firearms and ammunition and appeals to the public to work together with police to fight crime in their communities."
