CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said that the number of motorists arrested for driving under the influence was a concern and remained a challenge on the roads.
Metro police officers conducted vehicle patrols in the Cape Town CBD on Saturday, which led to the arrest of four suspects aged between 31 and 42 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Cape Town mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said that 68 suspects were arrested and 3,265 fines issued during patrols.
Smith said that of those arrested, 17 were for driving under the influence of alcohol and 38 for the illegal possession of drugs.
"The number of motorists arrested for driving under the influence is a concern and remains a challenge on the roads. Drunk drivers pose a serious threat to a safe road environment and increase the risk of fatal accidents."
Smith said that the attitude of drunk drivers who think they will not be caught or simply don't care cannot be tolerated.
"Our officers will continue to patrol the roads and arrest those who think they are above the law. We should all use the roads responsibly and respect other road users."
