CAPE TOWN - Alleged gang boss Nafiz Modack has been found guilty of corruption.
The Hawks says his conviction comes in the wake of a sentence handed down to a former police officer, Kolindren Govender, who entered into a plea bargain with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
The officer had pleaded guilty to 51 charges of corruption that relate to a corrupt relationship with Modack.
In a statement, the Hawks indicate that it was reported that in November 2011, Nafiz Modack paid Kolindren Govender a total amount of 146 thousand rand in return for special treatment.
The officer has also been convicted of defeating the ends of justice for preventing his colleagues from performing their duties.
Govonder admitted that in December 2012, he intervened and stopped the recovery of a Mercedes-Benz by police.
He's been handed five years imprisonment, of which four and a half years have been suspended, on condition he's not convicted of corruption.
The sentence will run concurrently with a six-year sentence handed down in a different matter.
The case against Modack has been remanded to 8 July 2025 for sentencing.
