During the early hours of 29 October 2023, a fire ripped through the Buthelezi home, killing everyone, except the politician.

At the time, Buthelezi told police and his party that he suspected it was an attack from angry community members.

However, it was later revealed that Buthelezi started the fire following an argument with his wife.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara hailed the court's decision to hand down four life sentences, as well as a five-year sentence for arson and another five years for defeating the ends of justice.

"The NPA welcomes the successful finalisation of this matter as it underscores our unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence and serious crimes. We commend the prosecution team and law enforcement for their relentless pursuit of justice, and we hope this outcome brings some comfort and closure to the families of the victims."
