CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis launched a scathing attack on National Coloured Congress (NCC) councillors after tabling a motion of no confidence against him.

At a special council sitting on Wednesday, the NCC accused the mayor of spreading false statements about its president, Fadiel Adams, and lying about meeting with the provincial police commissioner to discuss alleged corruption within the municipality.

Hill-Lewis survived the motion after the majority of councillors voted against it.

The mayor also addressed claims that he runs away from questions posed to him in council.

"The questions are so bad that you just making it too easy for me to embarrass you. Your questions are badly prepared, you haven't read the basic facts, you haven't done the basic homework, you haven't thought about what you're arguing, you just put a few words together that sound angry and screamy and then you vomit them into your microphone and expect us to make sense of them."

Hill-Lewis also took a dig at NCC councillors, claiming they're always found wanting in council.

"Soon, when Fadiel decides that you aren’t loyal enough or you're not swearing enough for his liking or you're not paying him enough, you would be out of here too like so many before you. Just like the SPCA had to come and remove his starving and neglected parrot from his home to save its life, he will have to remove you his other chattering parrots from these council benches."
