JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) doesn’t believe the relationship between South Africa and the United States (US) is beyond repair, as a meeting between the two countries draws closer.
Ramaphosa is expected to sit down with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday in what could turn out to be a confrontation over South Africa’s race polices and bilateral trade relations.
The relationship between the two countries deteriorated when Trump returned to office for a second term at the beginning of the year.
Trump’s invitation to the Oval Office comes a week after 49 Afrikaners relocated to the US as refugees under Washington’s resettlement programme.
ANC chief whip in Parliament, Mdumiseni Ntuli, said he hopes both leaders will be level-headed at the table.
“And when the two leaders are sitting down, we believe that a lot of clarity will be provided, which will help us strengthen our relationship. We don’t need a fight between South Africa and the US. We need a relationship that helps us build our two countries and reinforce each other in terms of the economy.”
