JOHANNESBURG - Following a spate of vandalism incidents at its critical infrastructures, the Tshwane municipality has set aside over half a billion rand for security.

The capital said the money will go towards technological surveillance, like cameras and strengthening boots on the ground.

The municipality said over the past year, 17 of its power stations have been damaged in suspected vandalism incidents.

Speaking at a post-budget media briefing on Thursday, Tshwane Finance MMC, Eugene Modise, said damaged infrastructure affects the municipality’s ability to provide service delivery.

“Earlier on, there were assets which were not protected, and as a result, we lost a fortune. Remember we said we lost almost R800-million, after visiting the showgrounds, it’s a different story, the amount will be over a billion rand. But now we are investing R583 million on technology and physical guarding.”
