JOHANNESBURG - The KwaZulu-Natal transport department has revised the number of people killed in a crash along the N2 after Mthunzini Toll Plaza down to eight.
The department had earlier said 9 people were killed.
It’s understood that a tow truck struck the rear end of a minibus which was transporting 24 Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members.
The congregants were travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba.
The provincial transport department said it was engaging family and church members of the deceased.
Spokesperson for the Transport MEC, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said those who were injured were transported to nearby hospitals.
"On this Mother’s Day, unfortunately the MEC has issued a statement indicating that this morning around 06h47 he received a report from our highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate informing him about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of eight people, mostly mothers. According to the MEC, losing a mother is a deeply painful experience that marks the radical change of the family’s life and involves a wide range of sad emotions."
A dark cloud is hanging over KwaZulu-Natal on Mother's Day: a tow truck rear-ended a bakkie, resulting in nine people perishing in a horrific accident in Empangeni.
