JOHANNESBURG - Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae is calling for stronger collaboration between communities and police to ensure law and order.

Speaking at the funeral of Keamogetswe Buys on Saturday, Letsoha-Mathae stressed that community support was vital in helping law enforcement maintain a governable province.

Buys was one of three constables who died after their vehicle plunged into the Hennops River in Centurion while travelling from the Free State to Polokwane on official duty.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Letsoha-Mathae has described Buys as an officer who embodied honour, courage, and sacrifice - values that define the police profession.

She also acknowledged the challenges within the police service, but emphasised that wrongdoing will not be tolerated:

"We are not blind to the fact that within our ranks there are police officers who do not adhere to the oath they took and therefore undermine our efforts to end criminality in our province. Those individuals will not be allowed to soil the good name of outstanding officers like Constable Buys."
