DURBAN - Police in KwaZulu-Natal have warned football supporters expected to descend on the Moses Mabhida Stadium for the Nedbank Cup final that violence will not be tolerated.
Some unhappy supporters who could not purchase tickets for the final have threatened to cause disruption.
This being the first Soweto derby final in over a decade is expected to draw thousands to the stadium and KZN deputy provincial commissioner responsible for policing and operations, Phumelele Makhoba, said they had noted some security threats surrounding the game.
"We’ve got a number of misinformation and inflammatory messages going around various social media platforms with some people recruiting others to stage protest on our around and other stadium, with others vowing to force their way into the stadium without tickets."
Makhoba added that lawlessness would be dealt with.
"Incitement of violence is a criminal offence, and we are appealing to our people to refrain from making statements that may incite violence and lawlessness."
