CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for a Parliamentary probe into the death of an inmate in Cape Town.

Quinton Fortuin was allegedly killed during a fight with prison warders at the Goodwood prison in February.

It's alleged that Fortuin attacked a prison warden with a sharpened object during the morning unlocking and counting process.

Wardens reportedly used force to subdue him and called for backup.

Fortuin's cause of death has not yet been disclosed, however, police are investigating the incident.

DA National Council of Provinces (NCOP) member on Security & Justice Nicholas Gotsell said they're demanding urgent answers from the Correctional Services Department following Fortuin's death.

"Despite being disarmed, Fortuin was allegedly assaulted and mauled by a dog before dying in hospital. The DA notes serious inconsistencies between SAPS, postmortem findings, and official reports. We've requested a full investigation by Parliament's Select Committee on Security and Justice."
