JOHANNESBURG - An outpatient clerk at the hospital where Chief Albert Luthuli was admitted on the day of his death says he did not see any bruises or bleeding from the head of the late African National Congress (ANC) struggle hero.

Mahomed Manjoo’s testimony is in contrast to that of Luthuli’s daughter-in-law, Wilhelmina, who says the chief had a large gash on his head when she saw him at the hospital.

Manjoo has been testifying in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court where the inquest into Luthuli's is being heard.

Luthuli died in 1967 with the apartheid government ruling his death accidental, saying he was hit by a train.

Manjoo says Luthuli was wheeled into the stranger hospital on a stretcher, he had been working there for about two years.

As an outpatient clerk, Manjoo says part of his job was to assess the injuries of patients to determine how urgently they needed treatment.

“There were no bleeding or bruises in the front of the chief’s face or head, also there was no blood on the trolley or his clothes that I would have noticed. His body was not covered.”

State advocate Annah Chuene pushed Manjo on this: "Would you say if he had sustained an injury at the back of his head, you would not have been able to see it at your vantage point?

Manjoo: "Correct.”

The inquest has been adjourned till Wednesday.
