JOHANNESBURG - The country has been struggling with delays in printing driving license cards, as the only card printing machine in the country broke down.

The department has been issuing temporary driving licenses in the interim, as the machine currently in use is old, slow and continues to malfunction.

The department says the machine is still undergoing maintenance and repairs.

The breakdown of the printing machine is yet another in a long line of malfunctions that have marred the licence application and renewal process for years.

Motorists have been advised to keep their expired driving licenses with them and apply for a temporary license as the country continues to battle delays in printing cards.

The sole card machine has been out of service for months, with the department relying on an outdated one, which has also been prone to breakdowns.

The department says the DLCA is liaising with the sole supplier in France to repair the equipment that has malfunctioned and resulted in the machine's breakdown.

It is understood that the card machine may be repaired in two to three weeks.

This incident is worsened by more problems after the latest tender process for new printing machines and updated licenses cards were flagged for irregularities.
