JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Health says no one has the right to prevent patients from accessing public medical facilities, after some patients were denied entry into the Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.
Chaos erupted at the facility this week when a group of residents asked patients to present their ID documents at the gate.
The group was trying to prevent undocumented foreign nationals from receiving treatment, claiming they are exhausting the public health sector.
Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said that one is less deserving of healthcare.
"No community member or structure has a right to prevent others from accessing healthcare services, and such illegal acts warrant unequivocal condemnation. Access to healthcare services is a constitutional right in this country, and therefore, no individual should be permitted to infringe upon another's right to access healthcare."
