5 ways to commemorate Freedom Day around Cape Town this weekend

It's another looong weekend because Freedom Day is on Sunday, 27 April and will be observed on Monday, 28 April.

The day commemorates South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections, held in 1994, which ended apartheid and brought President Nelson Mandela to power.

It's also a day to honour 31 years of democracy in South Africa, so if you're looking to be out and about...

These Freedom Day events are happening around the Cape:

Iziko Museums:

Visit the South African Museum, the South African National Gallery, and other attractions like the Slave Lodge, which depict the history of slavery in South Africa.

Free entry is offered on Freedom Day.

Run for Freedom:

The event commemorates Desmond Tutu and his fight for freedom.

The race begins at Langa Stadium.

Over 1,800 runners are expected to lace up for the fourth annual race – a 10km race celebrating resilience, community, and freedom.

Treasure Hunt for Kids

Long March to Freedom has 100 life-size statues of heroes from South Africa and abroad that tell an inspiring story of our fight for democracy.

If you visit on Sunday or Monday (it costs R20 to enter), there’s a free treasure hunt for kids with chocolate prizes.
