JOHANNESBURG - The City of Tshwane is warning residents to stay vigilant as severe thunderstorms are expected to lash most parts of Gauteng on Thursday afternoon into the evening.
A yellow level 4 weather warning has been issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), with adverse weather expected from around 1pm until midnight.
There’s an 80% chance of rain for Tshwane, along with strong winds, heavy downpours, hail and dangerous lightning.
City EMS spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said this may result in flooded roads, structural damage to homes, traffic disruptions and local power outages.
“When outdoors during lightning activity, immediately get out and away from ponds, lakes and other bodies of water. Do not seek shelter under isolated trees or tall objects if there is a thunderstorm.
"Avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads, bridges and swollen streams. If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.”
