SA Weather Service cautions Gauteng, KZN to brace for more heavy rains, thunderstorms

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents are warned to brace themselves for more rainy weather, with an alert level 4 warning issued for severe thunderstorms in the two provinces.

Both provinces have been battling harsh weather in recent days, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) announcing that wet weather is likely to persist for the rest of the week.

Residents staying in low-lying areas, informal settlements and along river streams are urged to avoid crossing rivers amid heavy downpours.

The yellow level 4 warning issued for most parts of Gauteng means residents can expect a drop in temperatures, with scattered showers and severe thunder showers.

Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said an orange level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms is also expected for the southern parts of the province.

“Remember, with severe thunderstorms we are expecting heavy downpours that lead to localised flooding, a possibility of damaging winds as well as a possibility of hail and excessive lightning."

Residents in KZN are also urged to exercise caution as extreme weather conditions that could lead to flooding and further damage to infrastructure are forecast for the province.
