CAPE TOWN - The mother of a teenager killed in a knife attack in Saldanha Bay says she hopes the truth will come out in court.

Seventeen-year-old Gerswin Vermeulen died after being stabbed at a 21st birthday party early on Easter Sunday morning.

Police said an 18-year-old was arrested and has since appeared in court for murder.

Western Cape police said officers responded to a complaint of a stabbing in White City in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, said officers found Vermeulen’s body in Stokvis Street.

"Reports suggested that the suspect had an argument with the victim... A scuffle ensued where the victim attacked the suspect with a knife. The victim was disarmed, and this resulted in the suspect stabbing the man, aged 17."

An 18-year-old suspect appeared in the Vredenberg Magistrates Court this week on a charge of murder.

Vermeulen's mother, Rolien, was reluctant to speak to the media but relayed that she hoped the truth would emerge in court.
