GNU to shift focus to conducting expenditure reviews on Godongwana's budget

JOHANNESBURG - The Government of National Unity (GNU) will now shift its focus to conducting expenditure reviews on Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana’s budget, aiming to ensure more efficient state spending.
This was announced during a multi-party briefing a short while ago, led by the African National Congress (ANC), alongside GNU partners and some opposition parties.

Over the past few weeks, the parties have been engaged in lengthy discussions to resolve the budget deadlock, primarily driven by the proposed increase in value-added tax (VAT).
Although National Treasury officially withdrew the proposed 0.5 percentage point VAT hike on Thursday morning, political parties are now focusing on addressing the revenue shortfall.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed during the briefing that the budget review process would now commence.
