DURBAN - Police have now confirmed that Deputy President Paul Mashatile's official vehicle was shot at in March.
The deputy president’s car was hit by sharp objects on the windscreen while he was travelling from an African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) meeting.
Mashatile said that at first, he thought it was stones thrown at the vehicle but his SAPS protectors later said the impact was more than that.
National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola confirmed the assassination attempt on Mashatile’s life after his convoy was shot at.
He said police had now concluded a part of their investigation.
Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said that both Mashatile and President Cyril Ramaphosa's details had been boosted.
"Crime Intelligence is also continuing with its regular risk and threat assessment on both the president and the deputy president. General Fannie Masemola confirms the reinforcement of security detail to both principals and has also expressed gratitude with the manner in which members of the PPS safeguard and handle the safety of both principals."
A high-level investigative team has been assigned to work on the matter.
